Orientation to the JOURNEY

A Field Guide to the Adventure of a Life Time

The resources on these pages are like a field guide to the Journey of transformation.  The path described here is one that is rooted in what Alex Huxley called the "Perennial Tradition" which can be thought of as a thread that runs through all of the world’s living traditions and lies often latent and untapped in the human psyche.  This thread creates a beautiful, albeit unfinished, tapestry bringing into living color four basic understandings:

Everything Belongs

Everything belongs to and exists in what we call God or Divine Reality. (You may have other words to describe this Reality: The Sacred, Love, The Universe Story, Inter-being, etc.)  This Reality informs but remains distinct from the intrinsically limited lens through which we view it.  When we confuse our particular lens with Divine Reality we begin to lose sight and start to bump into each other. This is one definition of fundamentalism.

Love Is On the Move

Love is on the move, dissolving the illusion of our separateness, healing our “sight” so that one day we may see that we are all one:  you, me, all creation within Divine Reality.

This is a field guide for the spiritual sojourner.  The Journey is more than a map, which of course is helpful for any new adventure into unknown territory.   Our journey is not to some place, like a fixed point on a map, or a town on some distant coast waiting for the tourists to arrive.   Nor is our “destination”  an immovable spot on some cosmic map toward which we make our way like the pioneers in wagon trains or pilgrims progressing on some dusty trail full of dangers along the way.  It’s not as simple as that.  You see, the future, towards which we are moving, is also moving toward us.

Deep Longing

There is in each and every human (and perhaps all of creation), a natural capacity, similarity, and longing for Divine Reality.  Think now of that stirring inside of you that holds the essential questions of ultimate meaning and love with aliveness and curiosity.

When not attended to with compassion and respect, we often try to soothe this very human restlessness with habits and behaviors that contstrict our hearts and minds and leave us feeling stuck on our own path.

Every Journey Is Unique and Ongoing

This is your journey.  Though the major milestones along the way are thankfully archetypical and can be pointed to by any traveler, this adventure will lead you to places that are intimately unique, only found in those recesses of your own experience that like an untraveled forest path have become overgrown.

We have a tendency to view spiritual transformation as being a lineal process which follows a relatively straight line, one step after another.  While this is sometimes true, the journey is often circuitous, messy, and full of detours and surprises.  This “field guide” is organized with this in mind.  Our hope is that you may, with the help of allies and resources,  become more aware of where you are on the path and how to deepen your awareness of what is needed to sustain you.  The aim is for you, and each one of us, to move forward toward your unique purpose and destiny.  It is through this awareness that we all can access the natural insights, wisdom and love that lies under the surface of life.

Allies. . . There when you need them

“Your beloved and your friends were once strangers. Somehow at a particular time, they came from the distance toward your life. Their arrival seemed so accidental and contingent. Now your life is unimaginable without them. Similarly, your identity and vision are composed of a certain constellation of ideas and feelings that surfaced from the depths of the distance within you. To lose these now would be to lose yourself.”
