Tour of the Types
Saturday, May 7, 2016
Time: 9:00 a.m - noon
Cost: $20
The Enneagram provides a powerful map for our work on the paths of mindfulness, spiritual growth, and
personal transformation. It can also be viewed as a model of important aspects of the human psyche. From either
viewpoint, it is evident that the processes beneath our tendencies to see the world through our particular
Enneagram lenses are happening on the biological platform – the brain – which holds the human mind. How and
why might this come to be? What can we learn from the dramatic growth over the past two decades in scientific
understanding of the human mind?
In this workshop we will consider those questions, drawing on an emerging body of work which looks at the
Enneagram from a perspective grounded in contemporary science. In particular we will explore fundamental
emotion systems which are part of our evolutionary heritage as mammals, including fear, anger and separation
distress, and how they shape unconscious processes which lie beneath our Enneagram styles. Then in small group
exercises and narrative panels we will explore how this perspective informs our understanding of, and compassion
for ourselves and others, and the growth we experience as we engage in transformational work with the
Enneagram.
JACK KILLEN, MD, recently retired from a 33 year career in biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health.
He has been an avid student of the Enneagram for 20 years, and is certified as an Enneagram teacher and Coach by
Enneagram Studies in the Narrative Tradition, and The Enneagram in Business. He has particular interests in the
intersections of science, the Enneagram, and wisdom tradition teachings and practices. He and colleagues Dan Siegel,
David Daniels, Denise Daniels, Laura Baker, and Kristin Arthur collaborate in an ongoing project which seeks to look at
the Enneagram from a scientific perspective. He teaches Enneagram workshops and collaborates with his husband Fred
Boykin in work with individuals and couples. He is a professional member of the International Enneagram Association,
and a member and past president of the Enneagram Association in the Narrative Tradition.
